Abstract

In this blog, we delved into the concept of social isolation, shedding light on why it was essential. We began by defining social isolation and its implications. Then, we dealt with several facts that underscored its adverse effects on our mental and physical health, especially for working employees. We distinguished social isolation and loneliness. In conclusion, we provided solutions to conquer those challenges and enhance productivity.
In the modern world, we are all surrounded by materialistic things that make us think twice about our capabilities to overcome challenges. The new generation had entirely shifted to the online world, leaving behind the physical realm. Due to all these reasons, social isolation has become a much bigger problem.

“Social isolation is the most devastating thing you can do to a human being; I don’t care how old are you” — Rosalind Wiseman

What is Social isolation?

If we go according to the definition of Wikipedia, “Social isolation is a state of complete or near-complete lack of contact between an individual and society. It differs from loneliness, reflecting a temporary and involuntary lack of contact with other humans. Social isolation can be an issue for individuals of any age, though symptoms may differ by age group.” If we talk about the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing was at its peak, and it was a time when extroverts were also feeling socially isolated and could not meet their family members. It is not only pandemics or other unfortunate times when we feel isolated. Many people in this world sometimes feel disconnected from the world. If you feel socially isolated, you will find this blog very helpful, as we will also discuss some remedies to get out of it.

Facts on how many people suffer from social isolation.

Now, if we talk about the number, roughly 12.3% of people between the ages of 18 and 79 suffer from social isolation. According to the data, [1] old age people mainly suffer from social isolation because they depend mainly on their family members. However, these numbers among young people have risen in the last few years. If only seen within India, 20.5% of adults feel socially isolated, per the study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Difference between Social isolation and loneliness.

Most people get confused between social isolation and loneliness, these two are different topics.

There is a difference between feeling lonely and being socially isolated [2], but they are related. Feeling lonely means feeling sad because you’re alone or not with the people you want to be with. Being socially isolated means not having many chances to talk to people and not having many friends to talk to regularly. You can live by yourself and still be okay and not feel lonely or isolated. On the other hand, you can be with other people but still feel very lonely. So these are two different things.

Effects of social isolation on mental and physical health.

Social isolation can have adverse effects on our mental and physical health. Even though the measurement of social isolation can be challenging recent research has concluded that social isolation has significantly increased the risk of premature death. Social isolation can increase the risk by 50% of having dementia (a general term used for loss of memory, and problem-solving). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “ Poor social relationships were associated with a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.”

One who spends more than 50% of their time working from home is more likely to suffer from psychological problems, such as anxiety. Social isolation can create higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.

If we see loneliness and social isolation are two different things their effect on the productivity of the individual is somewhat similar. As a human being it is very important to socialize otherwise it will reduce productivity and will feel less engaged.

Social isolation and depression are concerns not only for family members but it cost employers an estimated $44 billion each year in productivity [3].

How to tackle social isolation?

Now finally the most awaited part is how this problem can be solved [4]. In the realm of this online world, effective management of work and getting some time out for yourself in which you can go for a walk in the park or malls can definitely improve the mind state from a hectic to a cheerful mood. Involves setting clear and attainable daily and weekly goals. Promoting peer support, and talking to the family members and relatives as much as possible.

We hope this blog has added some valuable content to your life.
